1. Central Sector Interest Subsidy Scheme – 2009
The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education Government of India, has launched a scheme of Interest Subsidy on education loan taken by the students from economically weaker sections to pursue technical / professional education in India under the Educational loan Scheme of the Indian banks Association in the country.
The silent features of the scheme are reproduced hereunder:-
The Central Government has approved the educational loan scheme for pursuing any of the approved courses of studies in technical and professional streams from recognized institutions in the country.
Under the scheme, interest payable by the students availing the education loan for professional courses for the period of moratorium (i.e. course period plus 1 year or six months of getting job, whichever is earlier) shall be borne by the government.
After the period of moratorium is over, the interest on the outstanding loan shall be paid by the students in accordance with the provisions of the education loan scheme.
The benefit under the scheme would be applicable to those students belonging to economically weaker sections with annual parental income upto Rs. 4.5 lacs per annum.
Interest subsidy under this scheme shall not be available for those students who either discontinue the course midstream or for those who are expelled from the Institution on disciplinary or academic grounds.
The scheme is applicable from the academic year 2009-10.
2. Educational Loan Scheme
The National Minorities development and finance corporation (NMDFC) extends educational loans with an objective to facilitate job oriented education for the eligible persons belonging to Minorities. Under this scheme, loan of up to Rs. 15.00 Lakhs is available at the rate Rs. 3.00 lakhs p.a. for ‘technical and professional courses‘of durations not exceeding five years. Funds for this purpose are made available to the State Channelizing Agencies (SCAs) at an interest rate of 1 % p.a. for on-lending to the beneficiaries at 3% interest p.a. The loan is payable in maximum five years after completion of the course.
